What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Safe Harbors purchased a blighted hotel and transformed it into an award-winning mixed use project, the Cornerstone Residence which opened in 2006. The Cornerstone provides safe, affordable, permanent, supportive housing for 128 neighbors including the formerly homeless, those
living with mental health health and physical disabilities, veterans and low income working adults.
Safe Harbors’ award winning Ann Street Gallery provides exhibitions, events and programs that encourage a greater public understanding and appreciation of contemporary art across cultures and among generations. Since opening its doors in 2007, the Ann Street Gallery has brought the finest in contemporary art from across the county and around the globe to downtown Newburgh, creating a cultural hub in the community that is free, open and accessible to neighbors and visitors alike. The gallery has earned the distinction of being a four-time winner of Best Gallery in the Hudson Valley by the readers of the Times Herald Record. Under the umbrella of Safe Harbors of the Hudson, the gallery has evolved into a venue that has supported hundreds of artists through a highly respected exhibition program and community events. The unique 1700 square foot gallery hosts a new exhibition approximately every six weeks, featuring established and emerging artists who work in a wide cross-section of media and divergent genres. The gallery brings contemporary art to a new population and provides an opportunity for creative exploration on an unparalleled scale within the City of Newburgh, creating a destination that nourishes the arts and enhances the positive cultural energy in the community.
Population(s) ServedIn 2015, Safe Harbors purchased the half acre vacant land adjacent to our organization’s headquarters to prevent irresponsible development and to ensure the space remained a community asset. In 2016 and 2017, Safe Harbors developed this long-vacant lot into Safe Harbors Green, a fully ADA accessible and fully activated community gathering space with lawns and benches, solar lighted pathways, shade trees, native plantings, and rain water gardens.
Since its beautification, the space has been the location for programs, festivals, outdoor performance and public art. The past three summers, the Green has served as the location for Safe Harbors Circus on the Green a free, circus program which brings a diverse group of 25, 12-16 year olds from Newburgh together for a two week introduction to circus arts, including a flying trapeze which traverses the park. The space is the central point for Newburgh Illuminated, a city-wide cultural festival that attracts tens of thousands of attendees. In conjunction with the City of Newburgh, Safe Harbors Green hosts family movie nights throughout the summer. The past several summers we have hosted Salsa Under the Stars- a large, live music and dance community event bringing hundreds of our neighbors together to celebrate Latinx culture. The park also provides a location for large scale public art installations.
The Green is an urban oasis - a gathering place that fosters community connection, neighborhood engagement, public health and safety and economic development.
